Due to the delays caused by the pandemic, we decided that we had to suspend some of our award cycles, including The Tuscarora Award which was to open on February 1, 2023 and close at midnight EST on May 31, 2023. Our announcement of this decision can be found here.

Our readers are currently reviewing and evaluating the last group of submissions. Our longlist will be announced on the blog, so be sure to follow us here.

The inaugural winner of the Tuscarora Award  is Marjorie Sandor of Corvallis, Oregon for her historical novel The Secret Music at Tordesillas.

The full list of semi-finalists, finalists and winner of the inaugural cycle of the Tuscarora Award can be found here.

Once we catch up on our backlog and emerge from the remaining difficulties caused by the pandemic, The Tuscarora Award will be offered yearly for an unpublished book-length work of historical fiction.

Entry fee: $20 US.

Additional information about The Tuscarora Award

This competition is open to international submissions for all writers in English. We also welcome translations into English from all languages.  The author must submit, since this is a writing award, not a translation award.  All translations must include the name of the translator and the original language in the submission materials. Translations need only be unpublished in English. All other publications, both in original language and other translated languages are permitted.

Please be aware that we consider ALL forms of publication as disqualification. Self-publishing is publication; if your manuscript has an isbn number, or if it is available for sale online and/or in brick and mortar stores, your book is “published”.

All submissions must include name, address, telephone number, email, website (if you have one), a brief biography, outline, full synopsis and full manuscript, in that order. Any submissions that do not include the requested materials will not be read.

All work must be submitted online submissions are through Submittable at the link: https://hiddenriverartssubmissions.submittable.com/submit/93385/the-tuscarora-award-in-historical-fiction

Please note that Submittable permits only one document upload, so all materials must be combined into ONE document before uploading.

Simultaneous submissions are accepted. We ask only that you contact us asap if you place the manuscript for publication elsewhere. Multiple submissions are also accepted; each has to be submitted separately.

All awards are decided by Hidden River staff, and decisions are final.

Note: All submissions will be considered for regular publication by Hidden River Publishing.
