Hidden River Arts offers an award of $1,000 and publication by Hidden River Press, an imprint of Hidden River Publishing, for an original collection of short stories. Previous publication of individual stories is acceptable, as long as you include the list of the published stories, the journals and magazines where they appeared, and authorize that the rights have reverted to you, as author.

Entry fee: $20 US. This competition is open to international submissions for all writers in English. We accept simultaneous submissions, and ask only that you notify us immediately if your book has been accepted for publication elsewhere. We also accept multiple submissions; each submissions must be a separate entry. We also accept translations into English, but while the translator’s name must be included in the submission materials, the manuscript MUST BE submitted by the author and not the translator.  This is not a translation award.

All submissions must include name, address, telephone number, email, website (if you have one),and a brief biography. We request that you include a very brief synopsis of each story in your collection (about 2 sentence will suffice). If your collection is one of linked, inter-related stories, or if it is a novel-in-stories, please also include an outline, and fuller synopsis that describes not only each story, but the arc of the stories. All of this should be uploaded into ONE manuscript, with the full manuscript coming LAST. full manuscript. Online submissions through Submittable is required. This window will not open until April 1, 2023. (Again: Please note that, when submitting online, all materials must be combined into ONE document before uploading.)

We encourage simultaneous submissions, because we believe that writers have a right to continue promoting and offering their work while waiting for the decisions of literary organizations.  We fully understand that waiting for these decisions can be frustrating. We only ask that you notify us quickly if your manuscript is accepted for publication elsewhere.  We also accept multiple submissions.  Each has to be submitted individually. All our competitions are open to writers in English from around the world.

All awards are decided by Hidden River staff, and decisions are final. The semi-finalists, finalists and winner will be announced on this blog, so please be sure to bookmark us to keep up-to-date on our progress.
